In the syringe
Cross-linked hyaluronic acid, 24 mg per ml. Lidocaine 0.3%, already in the gel. The lip is still numbed first. One syringe holds 0.55 ml. The box is often two syringes. That is 1.1 ml of the same gel, not a larger syringe and not another name.
What it is for
The maker’s use is lip volume and lip contour, and medium to deep lines, including lines around the mouth. Shape is decided on the day. It is not Volbella. Volbella is a different gel, 1 ml, £250. It is not Ultra 3 or Ultra 4. Those are the firmer Ultras.
The first week
The lip looks bigger on the day. That is the gel plus swelling. Ultra draws water, so the first days are fuller than the result. Redness, swelling and tenderness are the usual reaction. The maker says that reaction can last up to a week. Bruising can sit longer. If swelling, redness or tenderness is still there after a week, or the lip goes pale, mottled or very painful, contact the clinic the same day. Do not wait for a review.
How long
The instructions do not promise a number of months. They say the correction is temporary, and that it depends on the lip, the amount, and how it is placed. Allergan’s patient note for the Ultra gels says the effect is usually about 9 months to a year, then it fades. Lips move all day, so they are often the shorter end. Not a guarantee. A top-up is the same product, not a new one. The maker says wait until the reaction has settled, at least two weeks, before another syringe.
After
The maker’s aftercare is short. No makeup for 12 hours. For two weeks, avoid long sun, sunbeds, UV, temperatures below freezing, sauna and steam. Leave the lip alone. No massage unless you are told to. Sleep a little raised the first night. Skip a hard workout, alcohol and a hot bath on the day. The shape you judge is the lip after the swelling has gone, not the lip in the car on the way home.
